Singulair (Montelukast)
General information
Singulair is part of a group of medications called leukotriene modifiers. The active ingredient in Singulair is montelukast sodium. It is a prescription medication used to treat asthma and allergic rhinitis.
Directions
Use Singulair exactly as it was prescribed for you to get best results. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet. Use this medicine with a full glass of water. The recommended Singulair dose for adults and adolescents age 15 is 10 mg a day. For children ages 6 to 14 years old, the dose is 5 mg once daily. For children ages 2 to 5 years old, the recommended dosage of Singulair is 4 mg once daily. For children age 6-23 months old, the recommended dose is one packet of Singulair oral granules (4 mg) once daily.
Precautions
Do not use Singulair to treat an asthma attack. It is not recommended to take the medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, for children under 6 years.
Contraindications
The patients who have allergy to any component of this drug can't use Singulair.
Possible side effect
The drug may cause hives, headache, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, numbness, tremors, changes of mood or behavior, depression, upset stomach, diarrhea. If you experience one of the side effects listed above you should stop taking Singulair and consult with your doctor at once.
Drug interactions
Singulair can interact with: nitroprusside, nitrates, cisapride, sildenafil medication, high blood pressure drugs, HIV and AIDS medicine, fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole. Remember that the interactions with one of these medication doesn't mean that you need to stop using some of them.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are stomach pain, thirst, muscle contraction.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-77 degrees F (15-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
